More Dollars for Stomachs
Was at the UN yesterday, to hear Josette Sheeran, leader of the World Food Programme, announce her latest $67 million pilot to get agricultural markets going in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Guatemala, among other hungry and impoverished countries. The Bill Gates Foundation provided the dough, along with Howard Buffet. But I wonder . . . Can the great philanthro-capitalists, who have made their fortunes throughout years of world hunger, use their own market tactics to solve the problem market tactics have created? Excuse my lit-crit, but isn't this what we English professors would call formally tragic?

Peacock Brains for Dinner
I have been reading one of my old issues of Granta Magazine, which dates back to the winter of 1995. The editors devoted the issue to food, and included an article by J.M. Coetzee, entitled "Meat Eaters." Here's a salient excerpt:
"The Roman Emperor Vitellius gave a feast in honour of Minerva at which the piéce de résistance called for the brains of a thousand peacocks and the tongues of a thousand flamingos."

I have written about American food culture and other subjects for Harper's Magazine, the New Yorker, Gourmet, Gastronomica, and the New York Times Magazine, among others. I've been a freelancer for years, and published something like one-hundred magazine articles, along with four books. I'm a contributing editor at Harper's, and teach at the City University of New York and CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism. Born in LA, I live in New York.
